Supper with the Saints

Supper with the Saints is a fun, intergenerational play on the traditional Lenten supper series but held on Zoom and using Lent Madness. Join Fr. JP Arrossa on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 pm to learn about the saints of the church, build community, and try out a new recipe each week.

Booklets are available at St. Michael's and a large bracket will be posted in the narthex.

Learn more about Lent Madness here:
https://www.lentmadness.org

You can learn about the saints through the above website and vote for the one you would like to move on to the next round.  Join us to share who you voted for and why.
Join whichever weeks you are able.

Spinach Beef Soup*

1 pound ground beef
3 garlic cloves, minced
1/2 white onion, chopped
2 quarts water or reduced-sodium beef broth
2 cans (14-1/2 ounces each) diced tomatoes , undrained
1 teaspoon dried basil
1/2 teaspoon pepper
1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
1/4 teaspoon salt
3 cups uncooked bow tie pasta
4 cups fresh spinach, coarsely chopped
Grated Parmesan cheese
  1. In a large pot over medium heat, cook ground beef, onion and garlic, cook throughly. Crumble beef and drain.
  2. Add beef broth (or water), tomatoes, and seasonings; bring to a boil
  3. Stir in pasta, return to a boil. Cook, uncovered, until pasta is tender.
  4. Add spinach until wilted
  5. Serve. Sprinkle with parmesan cheese

Serve with some crusty bread

*Make it vegetarian: substitute black or red-kidney beans for ground beef (2 14-1/2 oz cans, drained and rinsed); use vegetable stock or water for beef broth.
Why read about the Saints?

This is a way of learning about the women and men of faith who have gone before us in Christ.  They offer us a way to view the world, and as an example for living as Christians in the world, whether 2nd century Rome or 21st century Albuquerque.

So often we, as a church, kind of trap and immobilize the saints in stained glass, in icons, in pictures, etc. This is a way to remind everybody that these were real people.

As you read about each saint, you can reflect upon their life quietly to yourself; you can engage in discussion around what surprises you about their life; what challenges you in what you learn; or you can share saintly information with your family or your friends - you will be a fount of information.

It is also a way to see how our lives as a community of faith are connected across time and space.  When we recognize that these saints did the best they could in their life in Christ, we can rest assured that we too can do our best in our lives in Christ.

Why the supper part?

The preparation and eating of food is something we all have in common with one another.

Food is much more than nourishment. Food is a way through which we communicate sentiments, express our creativity, share ideas, tell stories, and create memories. When we share food with others we build and deepen our connection.

Food helps facilitate a way to gather, not just to eat, but to talk, share, and connect. And as a nerdy aside - this should sound somewhat liturgical.

Each week a soup recipe will be posted.  As we gather together on Zoom, we can share a common meal together.

The recipes try to help busy households with some thing that can be put together relatively quickly...but we know time runs short, things come up, tastes are different, etc.

Don't worry, no need to use the recipe to join the conversation.

It is a suggestion - all up to you. Come join us.
