Why read about the Saints?
This is a way of learning about the women and men of faith who have gone before us in Christ. They offer us a way to view the world, and as an example for living as Christians in the world, whether 2nd century Rome or 21st century Albuquerque. So often we, as a church, kind of trap and immobilize the saints in stained glass, in icons, in pictures, etc. This is a way to remind everybody that these were real people. As you read about each saint, you can reflect upon their life quietly to yourself; you can engage in discussion around what surprises you about their life; what challenges you in what you learn; or you can share saintly information with your family or your friends - you will be a fount of information. It is also a way to see how our lives as a community of faith are connected across time and space. When we recognize that these saints did the best they could in their life in Christ, we can rest assured that we too can do our best in our lives in Christ. Why the supper part? The preparation and eating of food is something we all have in common with one another. Food is much more than nourishment. Food is a way through which we communicate sentiments, express our creativity, share ideas, tell stories, and create memories. When we share food with others we build and deepen our connection. Food helps facilitate a way to gather, not just to eat, but to talk, share, and connect. And as a nerdy aside - this should sound somewhat liturgical. Each week a soup recipe will be posted. As we gather together on Zoom, we can share a common meal together. The recipes try to help busy households with some thing that can be put together relatively quickly...but we know time runs short, things come up, tastes are different, etc. Don't worry, no need to use the recipe to join the conversation. It is a suggestion - all up to you. Come join us. |
