On Michaelmas, featuring the blessing of our Ministry Complex
This year our patronal feast day of St. Michael and All Angels (Michaelmas) occurs on the 60th anniversary of our founding as a parish! We will celebrate this grand occasion with a party at 7pm on Friday night, Oct. 1, with live music, food, and a blessing of the newly-completed Ministry Complex by bishop-elect Michael Vono. In the liturgies on Sunday October 3, the festivities will continue. Bishop-elect Vono will join us, as will Bonnie Anderson, President of the Episcopal Church’s House of Deputies, and Bishop David Baily, newly-consecrated bishop of the Diocese of Navajoland. Don’t miss this great event in the life of our parish, celebrating our many years together, our many accomplishments, and our exciting future.

Sabbatical Discussion

Sunday Sept. 26, 12:30 pm
Bring either 2 sandwiches (one to share) or 2 beverages
On this date we’ll gather as a community and discuss the sabbatical time that Fr. Brian and the congregation will be taking (November 1, 2010 through May 2011). We’ll hear about Fr. Brian’s plans for what he’ll be doing and how he will be in touch with us during his absence. Just as importantly, we will talk about the ways in which we as a
congregation will utilize our sabbatical time. The 18-month ReImagine St. Michael’s process, which includes the Season of Listening conversations, will provide the structure to guide our self reflection and planning for the future during this time. Finally, we will talk about who will be taking responsibility for the things that Fr. Brian normally does as Rector, so that we all know how best to keep things running smoothly. To move things along, we’ll be sharing a quick, light lunch, so please bring either 2 sandwiches (one to share) or 2 beverages.

Fall 2010 Children & Youth Formation

Sunday, September 19th 10 am
The St. Michael and All Angels Fall 2010 Children and Youth Formation Programs will begin on Sunday, September
18th. Please join us!
Godly Play: Godly Play is based upon the recognition that children have an innate sense of the presence of God. All they lack is the appropriate language to help them identify and express it so it can be explored and strengthened. The Godly Play approach teaches classical Christian language in a way that enhances the child’s authentic experience of God so it can contribute to the creative life of the child and the world. Godly Play teaches children the art of using Christian language - parable, sacred story, silence and liturgical action - helping them become more fully aware of the mystery of God’s presence in their lives. Our Godly Play teachers are: Francesca MacDowell, Robin Hammer, Chuck Wiggins, Andrea Wiggins, Mary Mattheyer, Billie Helean, Scott McCune, Ann Wright, Melanie Peterson, Fr. Christopher and Barbara Fries.
Seasons of the Spirit: Supports faith communities and families in their life together by exploring meaning and mystery in the Bible, being grounded in thoughtful theology, empowering children, youth, and adults to be transformed in Christ, inspiring and equipping leaders, nurturing the imaginative spirit, offering resources for all
ages, integrating worship, learning, and serving ministries. Our Seasons of the Spirit staff are: Jeanelle Mc Guire and Katy Rooney.
Rite 13 and Journey to Adulthood: The Journey to Adulthood is a complete youth ministry program of spiritual formation for 6th-12th grades. It uses Bible study, prayer, rites of passage, outreach
ministries and both serious and playful activities to underscore its two guiding principles: 1. Manhood and womanhood are free gifts from God. 2. Adulthood must be learned.
Rite-13: The first two years (6th & 7th or 7th & 8th graders) that focus on celebrating the individuality of each young person and their creative potential. The Rite-13 liturgy (A celebration of Manhood and
Womanhood) is the community expression of this and a rite of passage from childhood towards adulthood. Our Rite 13 leaders are: Pat and Carolyn Newman and Nick and Claire Porter.
J2A: The middle portion of the program (8th & 9th or 9th and 10th graders), engages youth with the skills and critical thinking involved in adulthood. The youth plan and embark on a pilgrimage together at
the end of this segment. This experience is often the spiritual highlight of their youth. Our J2A leaders are: Don Clark, Maren McLaren, and Nancy Hilton.

ReImagine

The ReImagine Core Team has been meeting monthly, studying scripture and writings about the Eucharist. We have been deepening relationships with one another as we prepare to take our next steps. Our process centers on three questions:
1. Who are we as the community of St. Michael's?
2. Where is God calling us into ministry as a faith community?
3. How will we take action in response to that call?
The process is not about the Core Team, but about the entire congregation telling stories, listening for God's call, and growing more deeply into the community that God calls us to be. To that end, we are inviting everyone at St. Michael's to be part of the process. Dorotheos of Gaza used the image of a wheel to show that our lives and our life in God is intricately connected. God is the center of the wheel and people are the spokes. As we move closer to God, we move closer to one another and vice versa.
We are beginning a Season of Listening at St. Michael's. We will spend June and July inviting individuals to sit down together in one-on-one conversations about your experience at St. Michael's: what it means to you, what your hopes are, and where you sense God calling this congregation. You will be invited to sit down for 30-45 minutes with someone to share your stories together. It is not an interview, but a chance for two people to speak from personal experience.
We want to be clear that you are NOT being recruited for anything. You will NOT be asked for money. We simply want to invite you to join us in this process of ReImagining the St. Michael's community.
If you have questions or would like to know more, please contact Sue Joiner (sjoiner@samaritancc.com, 332-8020) or Christopher McLaren (christopherm@all-angels.com, 345-8147).
We'll look forward to talking with you!
