Isaiah 64:8-12 and John 17:20-26
We live in such a desolate world sometimes, full of pain and destruction, anxiety and tedium, that we feel as if the divine love had simply abandoned us, turned away, gone elsewhere, perhaps to seek out more worthy recipients.
If our separation from God and from each other is only an illusion, it's a very convincing one, reinforced daily by our struggle with the world. But Christ brings us the gift of realizing divine love, even in the midst of our difficult and ordinary lives. Through Christ we know our connection to God and to each other, even as we forget it almost immediately. It's as if the outer shell of the world cracked open for just a moment, and everything we thought we knew fell away as we caught a glimpse of the divine heart glowing in the center of all things. Christ reminds us that our lives are already holier than we can imagine.
